The adult movie industry is not doing so well.  Pay site memberships have dropped as much as 80%.  Porn actresses are getting paid less.  Many porn stars and porn makers are out of work.

The main culprit is the tube sites which offer free (and often pirated) porn by the truckloads.  But despite the explosion of free online porn, it’s a huge misconception that the industry as a whole is doing badly — porn has simply moved on.

Welcome to the webcam modeling era.  It’s the closest thing to “amateur” you can find.  Unlike recorded porn, live cam modeling is immune to piracy.  This makes the camming industry an especially lucrative business prospect.

Before getting started in this industry, I knew very little about it.  The idea that anyone with an internet connection and webcam could just log in from home and make wages similar to that of porn star was a very alluring proposition.  What other online job is there where you can make $50 an hour in as early as 24 hours from now?

A webcam model (also referred as webcam performer, camgirl, camboy, or adult chat host) is someone who broadcasts themselves on webcam through a live feed.  In free chat, they will seduce customers into paid private time where they will perform a private show.  Here they may dance, strip, or play with toys. Models charge on a per-minute basis for private shows. There are even non-nude chat options if you’re uncomfortable with stripping. This way you can literally make money by simply chatting to horny or lonely guys. (Read my interview with Never Nude and LiveJasmin Review to learn more about non-nude “Hot Flirt” category.)

The first known webcam model was a camgirl who went by the name “Jennicam.”  It’s reported that Jenni put up her cam site in 1996.  Apparently, she has since closed her site and moved on to work at a web design company.  Since then, the webcam industry has exploded in popularity and shows no signs of slowing down (read Should You Become a Webcam Model).

The most popular webcam site is LiveJasmin.  With over 40,000 registered male and female models, LiveJasmin makes it easy for anyone with no experience to sign up, submit a couple photos to prove your age, and start making money from home.  Most new webcam models are pleased to make $1000-$2000 (sometimes much more) in their first month working a 2 hours/day.

While most new cam models are simply looking for a way to make extra money, others will make a luxurious career out of stripping in front of their web cam.  That said, there are some minimal risks involved that new models should be aware of (read my Webcam Model Safety and The Untold Truth posts).

Webcam model wages can be incredibly lucrative (read How Much Do Cam Models Really Earn and LiveJasmin Scam?) However, this job is NOT for everyone. But as long as there continues to be a demand for live webcam entertainment, there will be camboys and camgirls willing to perform for the big bucks.
